EXPEDICIÓN GUARANÍ 2018

In Expedición Guaraní the participants will travel 450 km through the most beautiful sites of the country; al though Paraguay has no high mountains, you will reach the ones of the highest peaks of the country, you will have to pedal several miles of sand and mud roads, rappelling in beautiful waterfalls, all in an environment full of lush vegetation, the last remnant of the Atlantic Forest, which was the second largest rainforest in South America, it extends from Brazil (Pantanal area) through Paraguay, reaching Argentina.

Mixed teams of 4 members can aspire to reach the awards of the Expedition Category, and for slower or novice will have a cut with the intention that all teams can reach the finish line. But we enable an Adventure Category, with a distance of 200 km, for mixed teams of 4 members who want to experience for the first time the excitement of an expedition race with the best riders in the world.

Although the country does not have very actuals maps, we promise to fix them and add all the information needed to be able to trust them.

Paraguay is country with very friendly people, which is the reason why the excellent service to the runners will become the trademark of Expedición Guaraní.

RACE FORMAT

Expedición Guaraní is a race created by and for adventure racers. Therefore, our main objective is to design a technical and demanding course for the top teams, but also dynamic and affordable for slower teams, without forgetting to offer fun stages with attractive landscapes. The route will be full of contrasts, as it will pass through varied terrain such as mountain areas, atlantic forest, serpentine rivers...

All control points (CPs) and all transition areas (TAs) are mandatory. Moving to another activity or checking in (take the photographs) another section’s CP without previously having passed through the corresponding TA is not allowed.

There will be several cut offs along the course (defined in the RaceBook). Our aim is that as many teams as possible are able to reach the goal and therefore we have enabled these cut off zones, in order to allow the lagging teams to cut part of the course and reach the finish line and not miss the final party.

To complete the full course all TAs have to be visited and all CPs have to be validated along the course and up to the finish line. The TAs’ visits and CPs’ checks have to be validated by the corresponding system.

If a team skip a CP, either on its own decision or due to a cut off, it will still be competing, however, it will be ranked behind the teams that have managed to arrive longer in the race. For ranking purposes among these teams, it will be taken into account the number of CPs or TAs that the teams have reached without interruption.

Teams that do not reach the finish line at the established time will stop racing at the exact place where they are at that moment. These teams will have to return on their own or with the aid of the organization if necessary. Their relative position to other teams will be decided by the number of check points achieved or by analyzing the track if necessary.

The winning time is calculated to 80h and maximum race time will be124h. The race will start on Sunday night and teams will have until Friday night to reach the finish line. There won´t be mandatory stop during the race, so teams will manage their own rest. Maps will be delivered minutes before the race starts, once the teams are free from mobile devices.

Disciplines
DISCIPLINES

Expedición Guaraní is an adventure race in which are combined several disciplines. Mountain biking, trekking, kayaking and orienteering will be the principals and the teams will have to demonstrate their skills in all of them..

Orienteering

The orienteering can be considered the main discipline of the race, since in all sections teams will advance with the help of a single map and compass. Have at least a good navigator on the team may be the key in getting a good final result.

In the race you will use topographic updated maps, in scale 1: 50,000, although in some others sections or parts of the race other maps and / or scales may also be used.

Trekking

The trekking sections will be the most challenging parts of the race. Teams will have to walk in paths, crossing or going through rivers, climbing waterfalls and even making its own way through the middle of the forest.

Mountain Bike

Racers met several sections of mountain biking. It will be shot in all types of terrain and navigation will also be decisive in this discipline.

Teams must take some spare material and must be able to use it appropriately in case of failure.

Kayak

There will be some kayak sections. Some of them in rivers with easy rapids.

Ropes

Throughout the race there will be descending (abseiling) or ascending points with ropes.

LOCATION

Itapúa is a department in the southern region of Paraguay. The capital is the city of Encarnación. It is divided into 30 districts, making it the department with the most districts in the country.

This department was created after the breakup of the Misiones Department, with the city of Encarnación as the capital. It had a high economic growth in the first 30 years by the coming of immigrants and the Carlos Antonio Lopez Railway, the growth was accompanied with several ups and downs.

Then came an era of decline until the 50s when the Carnaval Encarnaceno became known and attracted tourists from various regions. In the 80s the department became more industrial, but modestly, compared with other departments like Central Department.

In 1989 the Yacyretá Dam displaced the people living in the Yacyretá Reservoir, which still continues. The San Roque González de Santa Cruz Bridge was inaugurated in 1991, connecting not only the city of Encarnación and Posadas, but Paraguay with Argentina.
